It's being demoted. September 28, 2026 - [Kyle Bruxvoort](https://blog.fetchbim.com/author/kyle-bruxvoort) ![](https://blog.fetchbim.com/hubfs/post-show-cover-slices.png) I expected to come back from AU with the future of Revit and AI on my mind, and don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of AI \[link to Linkedin article\]. What I didn’t expect was to be thinking about was the death of Revit. First let me get this out of the way, I don’t expect Revit to go anywhere any time soon. However, one line during the keynote was the first hint. “It doesn't do everything Revit does today, and it won't for a while, but it connects to the tools you use every day”. This is subtle but Anagnost’s language is implying that they see a future where Forma is doing more and more of what Revit is currently doing. The second and more blunt clue was a [companion article written on the same day](https://adsknews.autodesk.com/en/news/autodesk-forma-ai-aec-connected-workflows-2026/) by Amy Bunszel, the Executive Vice President of Architecture, Engineering and Construction Solutions. In the FAQ there is a question Q: "Will Autodesk Forma replace Revit?" A: "Over time, yes. More and more of the work that happens in Revit today will happen directly in Forma." It also contains "We will not force a sudden transition" and "We will continue investing in Revit to give customers a practical path toward that future.” Finally, this was confirmed in a [story from AEC Magazine.](https://aecmag.com/bim/autodesk-confirms-forma-will-replace-revit-over-time/) ## What can we learn from Revit’s past? For anyone paying attention to Revit for the last 10+ years this shouldn’t have come as a shock. Autodesk has put very little time into improving Revit, while continuing to raise prices and the [AEC world wasn’t afraid to let them know what they thought about that.](https://aecmag.com/bim/letter-to-autodesk-aec-customers-demand-better-value/) So what did the next six years after the 2020 open letter look like? ![Timeline from 2020 to 2026 comparing Revit releases with Autodesk's cloud and platform work. It starts with the 2020 open letter, where Autodesk admitted underinvesting in architectural modeling, and ends with the 2026 FAQ answering "Will Forma replace Revit?" with "Over time, yes."](https://blog.fetchbim.com/hs-fs/hubfs/revit-timeline-2020-2026.png?width=812&height=528&name=revit-timeline-2020-2026.png) On the surface Revit did get new features. Slanted and tapered walls, native PDF export, Toposolid finally replacing the old topography tools, sheet collections, dark mode and better tags. Some of that was real work and I don't want to pretend it wasn't. But if you read the release notes year to year, it looks a lot more like a list of fixes than a new direction for the product. The bigger changes were happening underneath, and unless you were writing code against Revit you probably didn't notice. In Revit 2021, units stopped being simple enums and became ForgeTypeIds. In Revit 2022 the parameter API followed, so something as basic as ParameterType became a ForgeTypeId too. At the time, Forge was the name of Autodesk's cloud platform. Revit's data was being relabeled so the cloud could understand it. After that the cloud milestones kept coming. Shared parameters moved to a cloud service in 2022. That same year Forge was renamed Autodesk Platform Services and Forma was announced as Autodesk's AEC cloud. In 2024 the AEC Data Model API let you query a Revit model's elements and properties without ever opening Revit. And with Revit 2027, Revit became a "Forma connected client" and Forma started coming with the Revit subscription. So did Autodesk answer the letter? I think they did, just not the way the letter asked them to. The money went into getting Revit's data out of the file and into the cloud, which is exactly what Forma needs if it's going to take on more of what Revit does. Looked at that way, "over time, yes" shouldn't surprise anyone. It's where the last six years have been heading. If there's a lesson here, it's to watch the plumbing and not just the release notes. The API change log was telling this story years before the FAQ was. ## What is the future of Revit? In August I wrote that the session catalog tells you more than the keynote does, and I think the same thing applies here. The keynote gave us the headline. If you want to know what it actually means for Revit, you have to look at the sessions and the public roadmaps, so after the show I went back through both. At the end I'll also look at how my August predictions held up. ### What the sessions say The session I'd point any Revit user to is the Architecture roadmap session. It's where the product teams talk directly to the people using their software every day. This year it was broken into four parts: the state of the industry, Forma for design, Forma connected clients, and finally Revit. Forma got more than half the hour. Revit got about twenty minutes, and about a quarter of that was AI. The Forma half was all about one place where the whole project team designs together. Instead of passing files back and forth, every discipline's model feeds into one shared model in Forma, and when one discipline makes a change everyone sees it. Revit and Civil 3D plug into that as clients. Then they showed Forma Building Design laying out floor plans and rooms against a program, with analysis running the whole time. To be clear, that's schematic design and not construction documents. But it's work that happens in Revit today, and it's already shipping. The Revit half had a different feel to it. Most of it was about documentation: annotation, tags, rooms, and a few AI features that the team itself called experimental. The most ambitious part was saved for the end, when they showed Revit running in the cloud with an AI model driving it. They also talked about pulling pieces of Revit out into services, starting with view generation, so you could use them without opening Revit at all. Autodesk actually drew this line publicly back in June, when they described the split as "Forma for earlier exploration and outcomes, and Revit for the detailed design work." The sessions just show what that looks like in practice. ![Chart of project phases from site and concept through construction. Forma for construction covers the build phase, and Forma's shared model runs underneath every phase.](https://blog.fetchbim.com/hubfs/forma-vs-revit-phases.png) Forma is taking the front end of the project: site, massing, early layouts and the analysis that goes along with them. It's also taking the data. The shared model, the issues and the project record now all live in Forma. Revit keeps detailed design and documentation, which is still the hardest part of the job and the part that actually gets built. The difference is that it keeps that work as a connected client, and more and more as an engine that Forma and AI tools call into. If that line moves, and I think it will, I expect it to move right one phase at a time. Nothing I saw suggested Forma is anywhere close to construction documents yet. ### What the roadmaps say The sessions tell you where Autodesk wants to go. The public roadmaps tell you what they're actually building, and since every card on the roadmap has a vote count, they also tell you what users are asking for. Everyone has been quoting the FAQ, so I decided to dig into the roadmap instead. On the Revit Architecture roadmap, most of the work in progress is documentation and collaboration: annotation tools, view titles, tags and cloud worksharing. A lot of it started as user ideas, which is great. What's missing is modeling. The most-voted cards on the entire board are modeling overhauls, and they're sitting in On Radar, which is basically Autodesk's way of saying "we're thinking about it." ![Bar chart of votes on the public Revit Architecture roadmap by section, comparing features Autodesk is building with features it is only considering. Modeling has 77 votes on work being built and 390 on work only being considered. Documentation has 231 being built and 66 considered. Collaboration and ecosystems has 286 being built and 139 considered. Users vote most for modeling, while Autodesk's active work is mostly documentation and collaboration.](https://blog.fetchbim.com/hs-fs/hubfs/roadmap-votes-vs-work.png?width=812&height=481&name=roadmap-votes-vs-work.png) Stairs and railings has 219 votes. Curtain walls has 83. Neither one is scheduled. To be fair, the cards that are in progress are newer, so they've had less time to collect votes. But the pattern is the same on the Structure and MEP roadmaps. Two things surprised me. The first is that users barely vote on the things Autodesk talked about the most at AU. All the Forma cards on the Revit roadmap add up to about ten votes, and the Autodesk Assistant card has sixteen. The investment and the demand are pointed in completely different directions. The second is that the Forma tools that overlap with Revit don't have a public roadmap at all. There is a "Forma (formerly ACC)" roadmap, but that one covers construction. Forma Site Design and Forma Building Design don't have a board you can read or vote on. So the product Autodesk says will do more and more of Revit's work is also the one product where you can't see the plan. The Revit Ideas forum fills in the rest of the picture. The most popular idea, and it's not even close, is Revit for Mac with 7,807 kudos. The next one has 2,792. Autodesk's answer, posted right on the roadmap, is that a native Mac version isn't worth the investment. Backwards compatibility gets a similar no. Of the thousand most popular ideas, more than three quarters are still marked "Gathering Support," and some of the biggest ones, like "OR" in filter rules, have been sitting at "Accepted" since 2016. In fairness to Autodesk, a lot of the ideas that did get built are the same features on the timeline above: PDF export, linked PDFs, measuring in 3D, dark theme. They are listening. They just seem to listen most to the smaller requests. Since my team builds families for a living, I went through the ideas that would make creating and using families easier, and a few of them hit close to home. Dropdown lists for parameters has been marked "Accepted" since 2016, and we still use an integer workaround that is every bit as annoying as it sounds. Marking a parameter as hidden is finally in progress, which is great, but we've been running our own system of shared parameters to handle it for years. Thumbnails in the properties dropdown, halftoning unused families in the project browser, and any kind of type naming from parameters would all save us real time. The one that says the most about Revit is the single instance of an array. It was a big deal when it finally shipped. But because Revit isn't backwards compatible, we can't use it yet. If we did, we'd have to maintain multiple versions of the same family, so we'll wait a couple more years until enough people have upgraded. That's the hidden cost of "no backwards compatibility." Even when a fix ships, anyone building content for more than one version of Revit can wait years before they're able to use it. There's one irony I can't help pointing out. Autodesk won't build Revit for Mac, but the cloud Revit demo at AU was running on a Mac. If Revit ever does make it to the Mac, my bet is it shows up as a cloud engine and not an app. ### What to expect from Revit Put the sessions and the roadmaps together and the next few years of Revit look pretty predictable. What I expect to see: - More documentation and annotation improvements, many of them straight from Revit Ideas. - More performance and graphics work. - Deeper Forma connections: shared data, analysis, the connected client leaving preview. - AI features in preview: the Assistant, the MCP servers, annotation automation. What I don't expect to see: - Big modeling overhauls like stairs or curtain walls. - A native Mac version. - Backwards compatibility. None of this means Revit is going away. It means Revit is being maintained as the place you document a building, while the new stuff gets built around it. ### What I'd do now - If you have cloud projects on Revit 2021 or older, plan the upgrade. Starting November 17, Revit Cloud Models stop working in versions older than the current release plus five. - Don't turn on the Forma connected client preview on a live project. Autodesk's own help page says once a project is added, there's no way to remove it. - If you're on Revit 2027, you already have Forma Site Design and Building Design. Try one on a project you've already finished and see what it would have told you. - Go vote. If the roadmap is where Autodesk says it's listening, put your name on the cards you care about. Stairs and railings could use the help. ## How my August predictions held up In August I made a few predictions, some serious and some not so serious. Here's how they did. - **Revit is turning into something else.** This one held, and honestly it held harder than I argued it. Three of the Revit 2027 items on Autodesk's launched list are Forma connectors. - **AI would be demonstrated at you, not taught to you.** Also held. Almost everything AI on the Revit side was in preview or research. - **More agent demos than agent deployments.** Held too. I barely met anyone using AI on a project for anything consequential. Where it was being used, it was visualization, asking questions of the model, or a little data enrichment. Most of the real AI work I saw was people building tools, and a lot of the time the AI was helping build the tool, not running inside it. And the one I need to adjust. I said the hard problem under all this AI is the data, meaning accurate content in the model, and that there were only about five sessions on it. That was true of the catalog, but Autodesk is working on part of the problem. Content Catalog is a cloud library for approved content, so you can search and place families without leaving Revit. Informed Design goes a step further and lets manufacturers publish configurable products, built in Inventor with their own rules, that designers can place in Revit. There's even a card on the roadmap called "Public Channels by Manufacturers." It has 17 votes and never came up on stage. But a catalog isn't content. Content Catalog gives you a better shelf, it doesn't put anything accurate on it. Someone still has to build the families and keep the data behind them right, and Informed Design only works if manufacturers model their products in Inventor first. Building that kind of content is my job, so take this with a grain of salt, but I'd call my prediction half right. Autodesk is building the plumbing for content. The content itself is still somebody else's problem. Then the fun ones. - **Another confusing naming decision.** I'll give myself partial credit. The big one, Autodesk Construction Cloud becoming Forma, was already telegraphed last year. What I didn't see coming was how many new AI brands would show up in a single keynote. In about fifteen minutes we got "Autodesk Context", "Autodesk Assistant Builder" and "Autodesk AI Orchestrator", on top of "Autodesk Assistant". None of the first three were in last year's keynote, and according to Autodesk's own press release they aren't planned to start rolling out until 2027. The names shipped first. - **The most common words would be acronyms.** I'd call this a split. AI were the only 2 letters I heard most of the day but surprisingly MCP barely came up in the keynotes. It was constantly referenced in the roadmap sessions however. - **At least five Mean Girls references at our booth.** Easily beaten. I stopped counting somewhere past ten, and I didn't expect the first one to come from the keynote stage. "So fetch." Second year in a row, same presenter. - **Next year's catalog will have more AI sessions and about the same number of labs.** Hopefully they will have more labs.
